Where does the word Motus come from? From the Latin to move.

Moving dramatic works that shake things up! Puppets and actors make up for a fascinating interaction. Puppets transposing human movement and actors breathing emotions, which is the basic impulse of puppets.

Emotions are the company’s driving force. They move audiences through images, music, word and silence.

Motus implies the fire of passion guided by the love of children.

Théâtre Motus is a new theatre company for young audiences. Founded by Hélène Ducharme and Sylvain Massé, Théâtre Motus combines the talents of a new generation of creative artists with artists who have already made their mark in Quebec’s theatre community. By exploring coloured shadow plays, acting techniques and puppeteering, Théâtre Motus is developing its own artistic style. The company is one of the new generation of children’s theatre companies and its founders believe it is essential to carry on the older companies’ approach and build on the quality and the originality of today’s children’s theatre.

In connection with its research and production work, the company is always looking to interact with young audiences. Through post-performance meetings, shadow-puppet workshops and joint projects in development, every effort is made to encourage interaction with young audiences. In addition, the input of consultants with respect to dramaturgy, puppeteering or a specific technique for one production is part of the creative process. Thus, the company remains open to the various artistic approaches by its peers, integrating the knowledge and striving to move the theatre practice forward.

For Motus, the new generation means aiming for the production of more than just one play. It is to be fully committed, in an original way, on a course that is already mapped out. For a new generation to take over, one has to be artistically committed on a regular basis. As a result, one carves a place in the community and is recognized by one’s peers.
